It wasn’t until recently that I got back into mixtapes. Usually because the mixtapes I have to listen to are TRASH lol, so I stopped all together. Welp, as of late.. I’ve been coming across mixtapes I dig.
I dig this.
So dig it.

BBU, the politically correct abbreviation for Bin Laden Blowin’ Up or Black, Brown and Ugly, are not terrorists, and not your average cool guys looking for the controversial-band-name shock value. Rather, they are a Juke-infused, B-More-inspired trio of Hip-Hop activists tossing out sounds somewhere between MIA and Dead Prez that come from the heart of Chicago. They are a product of the 80s, survivors of the inequitable public policies of the reactionary Reagan era, and three conscious laureates that are bubbling up from underground hype to main stage recognition to share what they have coined as “Revolutionary Juke Music”.
MCs Epic, Illekt and Jasson Perez make up the BBU trio, three close friends whose bonds have grown thick since their DIY outset in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago. Their music and network has been cultivated in the basements and leftist’s spaces scattered throughout the city which still shapes BBU to this day. In the past year BBU have taken their subversive Hip-Hop lyrics and infectious dance beats from CMJ to the colleges of the Mid-West to Perry’s Stage where Hollywood Holt brought the group out to perform their viral single “Chi Don’t Dance” during his set at Lollapalooza 2009; all the while sharing stages and dance floors with the likes of Diplo, Wale, Buraka Som Sistema, The Cool Kids, Dead Prez, DJ Sega, Jean Grae, Ebony Bones, Das Racist, Million $ Mano and a list of others. In the midst of their hectic schedule the group still remains active in the community and performs at numerous grassroots events in Chicago to show support and raise money for various international charities and causes. continue here
So for those of you that reside at the University of Michigan, chances are, you’ve heard about #thep2initiative. For those that follow @1987productions, @RodGailesOBC, and friends or twitter you may have seen some of the images on twitpic.com over the past few weeks. For those that have no clue what ‘the p2 initiative’ is…here’s your chance to get caught up to speed.
Its simple: the p2 initiative is a lifestyle campaign that encourages young adults to “Get the ULTIMATE Status Symbol: Knowing.” This means knowing your HIV status, no matter the result, and being empowered in maintaining your health.
The fact remains that, not knowing you status, doesn’t change it… So it’s always better to KNOW. Knowing means maintaining your status. If you’re negative, knowing empowers you to maintain a negative status. If you are positive, knowing empowers you to take care to stay healthy and help keep your partner healthy.
The images are a result of a collaboration between creative producer, Brandon Littlejohn and writer/director/photographer Rod Gailes OBC. This campaign was shot with all student subjects!
As a ’single frame movie-maker,’ OBC uses fine art photography to create a 10-image lifestyle campaign that promotes HIV testing and safer sex practice among college adults. As a lifestyle and fine art photographer, OBC’s unique approach to visual art solidifies his brand as a true visionary and storyteller.
“No matter what medium I work in, it’s all storytelling. In a motion picture, I have 24 frames per second; tens of thousands of frames depending on the length of the film. Telling a story in one frame, however, is the ultimate practice in honing my skills as a sculptor of narrative. ” -Rod Gailes OBC
Take a look at the rest of the campaign that has rolled out so far.
